At this very moment, the Jerte Valley in Spain is alive, with different varieties of cherries appearing on the trees and some even ready to eat! It is that time of year to give your baking kit and picnic hampers a dust off because the Jerte Cherry Protected Designation of Origin Regulatory Board has just announced that the delicious and divine Jerte Picota Cherries will arrive in UK stores around 20th June – this is less than a month away!
Over the past months, the Jerte Valley has enjoyed a beautiful transformation from the spring pink blossom to the deep red cherries and green trees. The first variety, the Navalinda Cherry, was certified by the Jerte Cherry Protected Designation of Origin Regulatory Board on 19th May and will now appear in the Spanish markets. This means the other cherries will soon follow suit.
The Jerte Cherry Protected Designation of Origin Regulatory Board is an entity that works to promote and certify the origin and quality of protected products. Its main objectives are to distribute the corporate image of the Protected Designation of Origin Jerte Cherry, as well as promote the cultivation and commercialization of high quality cherries.
In the Jerte Valley, the cherries are grown in a natural, traditional way and without any additives, which gives them a unique flavor and a very high content in vitamins. After a careful selection at the foot of a tree, according to strict quality control, only the best are identified with the status of the Protected Designation of Origin Jerte Cherry.
There are many different types of cherry, but the main variety in the Jerte Valley is the stalkless cherry called the Jerte Picota, which arrives in the UK around 20th June, and will be in store until approximately the first week of August (depending on how fast they are eaten!). This variety is unique with its peaked shape and the fact that it is sold instore without a stalk. Their P.D.O. status guarantees maximum quality that always accompanies them and shows that the fruit has been produced under rigorous quality controlled procedures.
The highest quality guaranteed by the P.D.O. status makes the Jerte Picota Cherry very easy to find in any supermarket thanks to the bright round logo that accompanies each box of cherries from the Jerte Valley.
